Presidential elections have commenced in Georgia, marking the first time in the country's history that the head of state is chosen not by the people, but by an electoral college within the parliament building. The proceedings are being broadcast live by the legislative body, as reported by IA "NewTimes.kz" referencing RIA Novosti.
The new president is elected by a college of 300 parliamentarians and deputies of various levels. Of these 300 individuals, the ruling party "Georgian Dream" has 211 delegates. The entire process is being streamed live on the parliament's website and social media. A candidate wins in the first round if they secure at least 2/3 of the votes.
The session began at 9:00 and will conclude at 14:00. Following this, the Central Election Commission of Georgia will hold a meeting to summarize the voting results and announce the outcomes of the electoral college.
The sole candidate for the presidency is former footballer and current deputy Mikheil Kavelashvili, nominated by the ruling party "Georgian Dream." On Tuesday, the State Security Service of Georgia stated that organizers of protest actions, in coordination with foreign intelligence agencies, plan to disrupt the presidential elections.
The election process is taking place amid a protest by opposition members outside the parliament building.
