The former president of Syria, Bashar Assad, has arrived in Moscow with members of his family. The Russian Federation has granted them asylum, reports BaigeNews.kz citing TASS.
"Assad, along with his family, has arrived in Moscow. Russia, based on humanitarian considerations, has provided them asylum," a source in the Kremlin told the agency.
It is also noted that Moscow considers it essential to resume negotiations to resolve the situation in Syria under the auspices of the UN. Leaders of the armed Syrian opposition have guaranteed the safety of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions on Syrian territory.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry made an official statement.
"As a result of negotiations between Bashar Assad and several participants in the armed conflict in the SAR, he made the decision to leave the presidency and exit the country, instructing for a peaceful transfer of power," the statement says.
It is worth remembering that a government building district caught fire in Damascus following airstrikes by the Israeli Air Force.
