A heavy snowfall in Almaty has paralyzed transportation. Passengers of both ground and air transport have found themselves trapped by the severe weather. The international airport announced that it is temporarily halting incoming flights. Meanwhile, the roads have turned into long traffic jams, reports IA "NewTimes.kz" citing TK KTK.
The precipitation began in the morning and continued throughout the day. After lunch, the snowfall seemed to lessen, but a few hours later, it intensified once again.
Residents and visitors of the city were asked to refrain from traveling to "Medeo" and "Shymbulak" today. According to officials, this would add extra strain on traffic, making it more difficult to clear the roads. However, ultimately, the traffic jams could not be avoided.
The city's map in popular applications has turned nearly completely burgundy. Traffic congestion is rated at 10 points, a figure that no longer surprises Almaty residents.
Taxi services also reacted: prices have surged several times over. By evening, representatives from the international airport issued a statement, announcing that planes arriving in Almaty would not be able to land in the near future.
It’s worth noting that Almaty airport has temporarily suspended the acceptance of flights due to the heavy snowfall.
Additionally, it has been reported that snowy weekends with blizzards are expected in Kazakhstan.
