Tragedy in Magdeburg: What we know about the driver who crashed into a crowd on December 21, 2024.

The publication reports at least 60 casualties.

According to the newspaper Die Welt, the perpetrator is a man born in 1974. He is a doctor from Saudi Arabia who moved to Germany in 2006.

The weekly Der Spiegel specifies that the 50-year-old suspect, Taleb A., is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. According to Die Welt, the man lived in the town of Bernburg, located 50 km from Magdeburg. He held a long-term residence permit in Germany. Searches were conducted at the suspect's residence at the time of the publication. The newspaper found a social media profile of a user named Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, which matches the description based on the aforementioned information.

As reported by Der Spiegel, Taleb had been actively involved in posting messages on social media for years. In particular, he offered advice to women from Saudi Arabia on how to escape the country. Additionally, he ran his own website dedicated to providing political asylum in Germany.

According to German media, the police had no information indicating that Taleb A. held Islamist views. Meanwhile, as media outlets have discovered, eight days ago, a video interview with Taleb A. appeared on an American blog that is hostile to Islam. For 45 minutes, he claims the following: the German state is conducting a covert "secret operation" to hunt down former Saudi Arabian citizens who have strayed from Islam in order to "destroy their lives." At the same time, he asserts that Syrian jihadists are receiving asylum in Germany.

In November, the man published what he called the "demands of the liberal Saudi opposition" on social media platform X. The first point stated: "Germany must protect its borders from illegal immigration. It turned out that the open border policy was Angela Merkel's (former Chancellor of Germany - Ed.) plan for the Islamization of Europe."

"According to the current information, this is a lone criminal. Therefore, the city is currently assessed to be no longer in danger, as we were able to detain him and all investigative actions are underway," stated politician Rainer Haseloff.

He described the incident in Magdeburg as a "catastrophe for the city of Magdeburg, for the federal state, and for Germany as a whole."

Saudi Arabia expressed its condolences to Germany regarding the tragedy at the Christmas market in Magdeburg.
