Astana. December 16. KAZAKHSTAN TODAY - Kazakhstan is considering the construction of a nuclear power plant with a capacity ranging from 2 to 2.8 GW in the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region, near the village of Ulken, reports the press service of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Negotiations are also underway with potential suppliers of nuclear technology, and an intergovernmental commission has been established to review proposals from all vendors on a competitive basis," the ministry informed.
It is emphasized that the introduction of renewable and alternative energy sources, along with gas generation, will significantly reduce the share of coal generation in the overall electricity consumption.
Thus, by 2035, a carbon offset of 44 million tons of CO 2 per year is planned. Energy sources are operating normally, and the heating season is proceeding steadily. The projects being implemented are sufficiently supported by primary resources," the agency added.
It should be noted that on October 6, 2024, a national referendum took place in which the majority of citizens supported the idea of constructing a nuclear power plant.
Previously, the head of the Ministry of Energy spoke about the preparations for the construction of the nuclear power plant.
