Moscow. December 12. KAZAKHSTAN TODAY - The Eurasian Development Bank, the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, and the Ministry of Energy of Kyrgyzstan have signed a trilateral Memorandum of Cooperation for the implementation of the "Construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky Cascade of Hydroelectric Power Stations" project, as reported by the bank's press service.

One of the key components of the economic development of the Kyrgyz Republic is the increase of energy capacities by utilizing the natural hydropotential of its rivers. The construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky cascade on the Kokomerena River holds strategic, economic, and social significance for Kyrgyzstan. The project is included in the National Energy Program until 2035, approved by a resolution of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic. The preliminary installed capacity of the three hydropower stations in the cascade is 1305 MW. Its implementation will help meet the current and future demand for electricity from the republic's consumers and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The signed Memorandum aims to prepare the necessary documents with the financial support of the EDB, including the development of a preliminary feasibility study for the further implementation of the investment project. The joint work of the bank and the ministries will allow for the development of options for the financial and economic model of the project, assess the size of capital expenditures and the socio-environmental impacts of its implementation, and determine key technical solutions and government support measures necessary for its execution.

The implementation of the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky cascade project with a capacity of 1.3 GW will be a crucial step in strengthening Kyrgyzstan's energy independence. This large-scale project will not only meet the country’s internal electricity needs but also transform it into one of the leading exporters of clean energy in the region, significantly bolstering the economy and creating thousands of new jobs," said Sanjar Bolotov, Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan.

The "Construction of the Suusamyr-Kokomerensky Cascade of Hydroelectric Power Stations" project is part of the key investment megaproject of the EDB "Water-Energy Complex of Central Asia", aimed at developing water-energy cooperation in the region and addressing national socio-economic challenges. The implementation of the investment project aligns with the bank's country strategy in the Kyrgyz Republic for 2022-2026, focusing on the modernization and construction of hydropower capacities and electricity transmission infrastructure.
